Basingstoke Radiotherapy Facility

Basingstoke Hospital in Hampshire required the construction of new specialist oncology and radiology facilities. Due to the specialty nature of this project, ESS Modular was required to liaise with specialist sub-contractors. In particular, this was required for the Linac room, where high-density blocks were essential for molecular cancer treatment.

The facilities provided several new challenges due to the need to isolate the radiation to make the building safe for patients and staff. This resulted in lead panelling being installed throughout the building. In the case of the Linac Bunker, lead panelling was not sufficient to properly deal with the large amounts of radiation produced. To overcome this specialised lead blocks were sourced and used in the construction of the bunker along with a winding hallway so that radiation dissipated at the exit to the bunker.

The site received the Bronze Award for the Considerate Constructors Scheme National Site  Award in 2014. It was also nominated for LABC Building Excellence Award for Best Public Service Building in 2014, and the Building Better Healthcare Award for Best Acute Hospital Development in 2015.
