Hollinwood Academy was built on a greenfield site, adjacent to the Newbridge Academy, to provide educational facilities to children aged 4 to 19 on the Autism spectrum.

The project included the full design of this specialist facility in partnership with our long standing architectural consultant bpA Architecture. This included developing a brief and understanding of the specific educational needs of the children including the requirement to deliver a pallet of finishes sympathetic to these needs.

The facility would also be widely used by the local community and the centre would be open all year round so the design brief had to accommodate secure entrance and exit strategies with that in mind to create community and school zones.

Sympathetic colour schemes were implemented along with careful selection of finished materials and each classroom was fitted with a full teaching wall to provide concealed cloak area, sink unit and TV screens. As the building was 2 storey to the rear a module design was introduced to create a balcony zone to each of the 1st floor classrooms to provide an area of outside teaching space and on the ground floor classroom doors open onto soft play surfacing.

Testimonial: “This new school is fantastic news for local parents and families and it will improve education for children with autism … We have high hopes for all our children, so making sure that we provide state-of-the-art facilities is essential.” Councillor Jim McMahon, Leader of Oldham Council
