Paxton Primary School

Paxton Primary School is located on a split-level site on Gipsy Hill, a densely populated residential area of South London. In order to meet the demand for places, the school needed to double its capacity in the space of a year while remaining fully operational for the existing 300 pupils enrolled.

The initial siteworks involved the demolition of a nursery and substation on site before preparing the foundations for the building. A key challenge was to complete the project with minimal intrusion on the surrounding residential area. In order to overcome this, a series of meetings with local residents’ associations formed a key part of the planning stages.

The modular construction process provided reassurance to these groups as it involved less time on site, less interruptions and decreased noise pollution for residents versus traditional construction methods. This work with the residents allowed for the delivery of 118 wide load modules with minimal disruption to the local community.
